Ancient City of Phaselis: Pine Forests, Aqueducts & Harbors

Phaselis is a picturesque archaeological site along the Turkish Riviera. The city was a maritime center and was founded in the 7th century BC by colonists from Rhodes.

What Makes Phaselis Special?

Unlike the surrounding mountain fortresses, Phaselis has a flat layout set within a bay surround by pine forests. The ancient city was built around natural harbors which allowed ships to dock safely regardless of wind direction.

The Roman Aqueduct & Central Avenue

At the entrance is a well preserved 2nd century AD Roman Aqueduct that once brought fresh water down to the city. A paved Main Street connects the two harbors. Most of the ruins you may visit are along this main street. There are remains of public bathhouses and a small 1,500 seat theater.

Swimming Beside Classical Ruins

What makes a visit to Phaselis truly unforgettable is the ability to combine sightseeing with a Mediterranean swim.

  • North Harbor: A quieter, pebbly bay situated near the ancient cemetery and city wall ruins.
  • Central Harbor: A small, shallow lagoon surrounded by forest.
  • South Harbor: The largest and most popular bay, featuring calm waters and tree shaded beaches overlooking submerged ancient ruins.
Ruins along the Mediterranean Sea

The shallow, sheltered waters of the South Harbor make it a popular spot for swimming beside ancient ruins.

Practical Travel Tips:

  • Transit: Located roughly 50 minutes (55 km / 34 miles) southwest of central Antalya, between Kemer and Tekirova. Local minibuses running between Antalya, Kemer and Tekirova stop directly at the site entrance.
  • What to Bring: Bring swimwear, towels, sun protection and water shoes.
  • Seasonality: Open year round. Summer (June-September) is peak season for combined beach and ruins trips (28°C-38°C / 82°F-100°F). Spring and autumn offer ideal temperatures for peaceful walking and exploring.
