Highlights of the Waterfront Complex
Taskopru: 2,000 Years of Engineering
Taskopru spans 310 meters across the Seyhan River and was built with massive limestone blocks. 14 of its original 21 arches remain standing. The construction was commissioned by Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD and later expanded under Justinian I. It is fully closed to motor vehicle traffic and serves as a vibrant pedestrian promenade offering river views and artisan stalls.
Sabanci Central Mosque (Sabanci Merkez Camii)
Sabanci Central Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Turkey and the broader region. It was opened in 1998 so is a rather modern construction.
- Ottoman Architecture: The mosque features a 32 meter main dome supported by four semi domes. The idea was to blend the dome structure of Hagia Sophia with the minaret design of Selimiye Mosque.
- Six Minarets: Four minarets built to stand at 99 meters symbolize the names of God. 2 other 75 meter minarets complete the structure.
- Spacious Courtyards: The courtyard and surrounding gardens integrate directly into the Central Park of Adana.
Central Park (Merkez Park) & River Walks
Central Park covers both sides of the mosque and is a collection of gardens, citrus trees, walking paths and bicycle trails. Visitors enjoy riverboat cruises and waterfront cafes along the riverbanks.
Practical Visiting Guide
The bridge and mosque complex is located in central Adana, easily reachable from major hotels and commercial districts.
- Getting There: Located a short 10 minute walk or brief taxi ride from central Adana hotels. Public buses and minibuses stop directly at the Merkez Park entrance.
- Mosque Etiquette: Open daily outside of prayer times with free entry. Modest dress is required (knees and shoulders covered; headscarves required for women).
- Best Time to Visit: Late afternoon into dusk. Explore the bridge and the mosque as temperatures cool down and watch the sunset over the Seyhan River.
